How to combat Migraine

Share

Migraines are an excruciating condition that causes pain as real as the pain of injuries. Even though it is a painful medical condition, you can combat migraines triggers if you follow some simple non-medical remedies. A healthy combination of medication and an active lifestyle can be a very effective way to prevent the migraines that trigger them in the first place. To undertake the remedies for combating migraines, you need to identify what are the main triggers that set off your migraines in the first place.

The most common migraine triggers are:

  • Foods that have tyramine in them.
  • Alcohol
  • Excess of beverages that have caffeine in them.
  • Food made with nitrates.
  • Bread and other baked goods.
  • Potato chips.
  • Pizza, peanuts, and chicken livers.

If you are getting overloaded with all the factors, some of the most effective ways of combating the incoming migraines are:

  1. Find a calm environment

You need to step back and take a break for a while at the first sign of migraines.

  • Turn off the lights- Migraines often increase sensitivity to light and sound. Find a dark, quiet room and rest there.
  • Try temperature therapy- Once you have rested for a while, you can apply hot or cold compresses to your head. Cold compresses have a numbing effect that relieves you from extreme pain. Hot compresses can relax tense Similarly, warm showers or baths have more or less the same effect.

2. Sleep

It is not uncommon for migraines to disrupt the sleep cycle, making it difficult to fall asleep. But what most people fail to realize is a poor sleep schedule might also trigger migraines in the first place.

  • Establish regular sleep hours- It is recommended to wake up and go to bed at the same hour, even on the weekends. Also, if you nap during the day, keep it short, at most 30 minutes.
  • Unwind at the end of the day- Any activities that help you release the steam and promote better sleep can be practiced after work. Listen to soothing music, take a long warm bath, and read your favorite books.
  • Minimize distractions- Keep your bedroom free from all the elements that can interfere with your sleep schedule. Reduce your screen time before going to bed. Do not take your work materials to bed. Set the temperature of your room as per your comfort. Be consistent- Do not miss any meals of the day. Make sure to have your meals at the same time every day.

3. Eat Wisely

  • Keep a food journal- Keeping track of the food you eat will help you find out which foods set off your migraine triggers. You can avoid those food items in the future.

4. Exercise Daily

  • Be consistent- Physical activity usually helps your body release certain chemicals that block the pain signals to your brain. These chemicals also help deal with stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety are usually very common triggers for migraines.
  • Tackles obesity- Obesity is another leading trigger of migraines. Daily physical activities will help in keeping your weight in check. Maintaining a healthy weight will improve your migraine condition.

Dealing with migraines daily can be a very painful challenge. But it is not completely impossible to combat migraines and live a better life. For a lot of people, opting for a healthy lifestyle has reduced the effect of migraines drastically. It is important to remember, that an active lifestyle alongside medication can improve your condition and would not hold you back in your daily life.
